What are some of the newest stars in the franchising world this year? To answer that, we’ve compiled this list of the companies submitted for Entrepreneur ‘s 2013 Franchise 500® ranking that began franchising in the last five years (since 2008).

1.Kona Ice

About Kona Ice

Kona Ice franchisees bring their trucks to events to serve up shaved ice that customers can flavor themselves. Franchisees also partner with schools, teams, youth groups and other community groups for fundraising events. Shaved ice carts, kiosks and trailer are also available.

2.Menchie’s

About Menchie’s

Menchie’s shops offer self-serve frozen yogurt in 100 rotating flavors, including low carb, no sugar added, dairy free, nonfat, gluten free, and kosher options. Founders Danna and Adam Caldwell came up with the company’s name from the nickname Adam gave when they were dating. They opened their first store in Los Angeles in 2007, and began franchising a year later.

3.Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt

About Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt

Based in Oklahoma City, Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt was founded in 2008 and began franchising a year later. Each Orange Leaf location offers self-serve frozen yogurt with a rotating selection of flavors and a toppings bar.

4.ShelfGenie Franchise Systems LLC

About ShelfGenie Franchise Systems LLC

ShelfGenie franchisees design and install the company’s Glide-Out shelves in kitchen cabinets, pantries, bathrooms and garages to improve organization and availability for homeowners. The company was founded in 2000 in Richmond, Virginia, and has been offering franchises since 2008.

5.Bricks 4 Kidz

About Bricks 4 Kidz

Bricks 4 Kidz offers Lego-brick building activities designed by engineers and architects in after-school classes, preschool classes, summer camps and birthday parties. The concept was created by a mother, Michelle Cote, in St. Augustine, Florida, in 2008, and began franchising a year later.

6.Smashburger Franchising LLC

About Smashburger Franchising LLC

After over 20 years working in the restaurant industry, for companies such as McDonald’s, Long John Silver’s, Pizza Hut and Quiznos, Tom Ryan started his own restaurant in 2007: Smashburger. Named for the way its burgers are cooked (by smashing a ball of ground beef onto the grill), Smashburger offers customers a variety of bun and topping choices. Chicken and veggie burgers are also available, as well as hot dogs, salads, sides and shakes.

7.GameTruck Licensing LLC

About GameTruck Licensing LLC

After years spent developing video games, Scott Novis came up with a new way to enjoy them: mobile video game theaters. He and his brother Chris built the first GameTruck and used it to throw a birthday party for a friend in 2006. Two years later, he began franchising the concept. Each GameTruck mobile video game theater is equipped with multiple flatscreen televisions and a variety of video games and consoles.

8.Paul Davis Emergency Services

About Paul Davis Emergency Services

For property owners affected by fire, water, mold, storms or other forms of property damage, Paul Davis Emergency Services offers rapid-response mitigation services such as emergency board-up, water and fire damage cleanup and mold removal. The company began franchising in 2009; sister company Paul Davis Restoration has been franchising its insurance-restoration services since 1970.

9.Signal 88 Security

About Signal 88 Security

Former law-enforcement professionals founded Signal 88 Security in 2003, in Omaha, Nebraska, where “signal 88” is police code for “situation secure.” In 2008, Reed Nyffeler began franchising Signal 88. Franchisees offer patrol, guard and virtual monitoring services and have access to proprietary software.

10.Mac Tools

About Mac Tools

The Mechanics Tool and Forge Company was founded in 1938, and its name was changed to Mac Tools in 1963. Today, Mac Tools is a division of Stanley Black & Decker Inc. and sells automotive tools and equipment. Prior to the start of franchising in 2011, the company offered distributorships.
