L.A., San Francisco make final push to lure George Lucas museum

The two finalists in the competition to land George Lucas’ Museum of Narrative Art — San Francisco and Los Angeles — will need to put together one last, best push for the $1 billion project in the next few weeks, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.

The Chronicle notes that both San Francisco and Los Angeles have until the next two weeks to submit a final offer to Lucas’ museum team, which will in turn make a decision by January 6.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted earlier this fall to approve a site for the museum on Treasure Island, an approval helped along by Lucas saying thathe would build the museum with his own money.

Lucas originally proposed his museum to San Francisco in 2013, with the goal of building it in The Presidio. A protracted process ended with Lucas’ team and The Presidio Trust unable to come to an agreement, which then brought other cities into the mix. After considering Chicago as a site for the museum, the race to acquire the museum has narrowed to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The current plan for the museum works in conjunction with Lennar Corp. and Wilson Meany to construct the museum close to the waterfront on Treasure Island. The museum would replace a planned 200-room hotel development.

“It seems to be going smoothly from our end,” Adam Van de Water, a project manager for the City and County of San Francisco, told the Chronicle. “We are doing our due diligence and hoping for the best.”
