Much-needed affordable housing is headed to the Mission District.

Nonprofit developers plan to bring 733 units of affordable housing to the Mission District, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Six developments will be added along Folsom Street, Mission Street and South Van Ness Avenue.

Mission Economic Development Agency will take on four of these projects, while Mission Housing Corp. will take on the rest. The projects will includ e 50K SF of commercial space. MEDA said its commercial space will be available for arts, after-school programs and affordable retailers.

“We are looking at how we can re-establish the Mission as a family-oriented, Latino culture, whereas right now it’s transitioning very quickly to a young professional culture,” MEDA director of community real estate Karoleen Feng told the Chronicle.

1950 Mission St.

Developer: Mission Housing Development Corp. and BRIDGE Housing

Number of Units: 157

Expected Completion Date: 2019

The 100% affordable housing project will build a five-story and nine-story building with a mix of studio, junior one-bedroom, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments. Amenities may includ e a rooftop garden, a courtyard, a community room, a kitchen and a bike workshop. Retail space will be available for nonprofits and entrepreneurs as will affordable space for artists. The project is designed by David Baker Architects.

490 South Van Ness Ave.

Developer: Mission Housing Development Corp. and BRIDGE Housing

Number of Units: 89

Expected Completion Date: 2019

This transit-oriented site will target low- to moderate-income families, including formerly homeless families. People who live within a mile of the site will be given high preference for 35 units.

1990 Folsom St.

Developer: MEDA and Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corp.

Number of Units: 143

Expected Completion Date: 2019

More than half of this development will includ e two- and three-bedroom units with 20% dedicated to formerly homeless families. The site will includ e a child care center and more than 10K SF of artists’ space.

2060 Folsom St.

Developer: MEDA and Chinatown Community Development Center

Number of Units: 127

Expected Completion Date: 2020

This affordable housing development will provide units for families and transitional-age youth. The project also will turn an existing parking lot into a new park. Additional services will includ e infant/toddler care, a preschool, after-school programs, and youth and young adult activities.

1296 Shotwell St.

Developer: MEDA and Chinatown Community Development Center

Number of Units: 94

Expected Completion Date: 2020

This senior housing project will provide 100% affordable housing for seniors age 62 and older and 20% will be for formerly homeless seniors. Studio and one-bedroom units will be available. The mixed-income building will provide units at 30% of area median income, 50% of area median income and 60% of area median income. Oyster Development donated this parcel as part of its affordability requirements for an upscale condo complex it is building at 2558 Mission St.

2070 Bryant St.

Developer: MEDA and Tenderloin Community Development Center

Number of Units: 130

Expected Completion Date: 2021

The development will includ e 38 units for formerly homeless families and more than 40% will have at least two bedrooms. This site was donated by market-rate developer Nick Podell to satisfy affordability requirements for the 2000 Bryant St. project. Mithun/Solomon is designing this project.
