31 Acres Along San Francisco’s Waterfront Closer To Development


A huge block of land is coming online along San Francisco’s southern waterfront. Remediation and restoration of the 31-acre site of PG&E’s decommissioned Hunters Point Power Plant is nearing completion. The city and PG&E have begun discussions over the future of the site, according to the San Francisco Business Times.

The power plant went out of operation in 2006 and has since been demolished. While it is unclear if PG&E will sell the land to a developer or remain a landowner and find a partner to develop the site, the property could become a mix of office, residential and hospitality. It is near Build Inc.’s India Basin project, FivePoint’s Shipyard and Candlestick projects and the two projects at Pier 70.

The site is zoned for industrial use and would need environmental reviews and approvals from the planning commission and board of supervisors. The city and PG&E have launched a series of workshops to develop a vision and plan for the site. The meetings will run once a month through November.

The 2009 India Basin Shoreline Plan originally proposed offices, a conference center, hotel and retail at the power plant site with housing on Evans and Hunters Point Boulevard, according to SocketSite.
