In 2004, Lookout founders John Hering, Kevin Mahaffey, and James Burgess made a security vulnerability. Bluetooth signals and Nokia mobile phones. When Nokia downplayed the significance of the security hole, the three of them took action.

They created the Blue Sniper, a gun-shaped microphone that could pull in Bluetooth signals from 1.2 miles away. Hering and Mahaffey then pointed their gun at the 2005 Academy Awards, hacking sensitive phone data from hundreds of movie stars to illustrated the importance of mobile Security. They encountered upon a team from the New York Times, who brought our story to the world.
