Overview

UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, Calif. is ranked No. 6 on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. It is nationally ranked in 15 adult and 10 pediatric specialties and rated high performing in 6 adult procedures and conditions. It is a general medical and surgical facility. It scored high in patient safety, demonstrating commitment to reducing accidents and medical mistakes. It is a teaching hospital. The UCSF Medical Center is a network of more than a half-dozen campuses across the San Francisco Bay Area. The three main campuses are the UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion and the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay. Parnassus Heights is home to the medical center’s original campus and features the Ambulatory Care Center and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. While this emergency department offers many types of critical care, including pediatrics, there is also a Children’s Emergency Department at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay. Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics offer inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization accommodations for mental illness and other types of conditions.

The Mount Zion campus is home to the UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. This clinic offers modern treatments melded with globally minded healing practices, complete with a meditative garden. Members of the team includ e massage therapists, acupuncturists, cancer and integrative medicine specialists, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, integrative psychiatrists and others.

The Obesity and Weight Management Clinic offers patients tools to a healthier lifestyle including dietary plans, exercise programs, support groups, lectures, behavior modification and surgery. The UCSF Bariatric Surgery Center performs procedures for obese patients with Type 2 diabetes, weight loss for an organ transplant, obstructive sleep apnea and other conditions.

For new mothers, UCSF’s Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood Assessment Clinic provides mental health services for those experiencing anxiety or mood changes during the course of and after their pregnancy. It offers therapy, medication, support groups and an individualized mental health plan for mothers.

The newest of the UCSF campuses, Mission Bay, is home to UC San Francisco’s research center, the UCSF Betty Irene Moore Women’s Hospital and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The cancer center works to apply research to early detection, viable treatments and quality of life for patients.
