Auctioneer ‘pleased’ with interest in Door County mansion

The auction house that’s putting the state of Wisconsin’s largest residential home up on the block has seen a good level of interest from potential buyers of the property.

The deadline for bids on the more than 35,000-square-foot home in Ellison Bay in Door County is 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Michael Fine, chief executive officer of Hilco Real Estate Auctions in Northbrook, Ill., said the company is not disclosing the number of potential bidders who have taken a tour of the property since the auction was announced last month.

“But I can say that we are pleased with the response,” Fine said in a response to emailed questions.

The estate, called Sur la Baie by its former owners, is being sold in a sealed bid auction. The estate is broken up into four separate parcels, and bidders have the option of bidding on a single parcel or up to all four.

Fine said interest has come from a broad geographical range, as expected.

“Door County has been a popular vacation/recreational area for generations, and as those generations move to other areas of the country or bring guests from other places, the market of buyers for trophy homes in the area continues to expand,” he said. “This property certainly has an interest to prospective buyers from locations far from Wisconsin’s borders.”
