Taiwan Tech 2-Wheeled Robot

The National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) launched a humanoid robot in 2011 that is capable of balancing on two wheels. The robot was created at NTUST’s Center for Intelligent Robots, also known as Taiwan Tech. In this feat, the robot was more popularly referred to as the “Taiwan Tech 2-wheeled Robot.” It was one of the few robots that NTUST created to bring a whole new level of entertainment to consumers.

The Taiwan Tech 2-wheeled Robot is a self-balancing robot often featured in trade shows and exhibits along with Taiwan Tech’s biped robots. The balancing ability of the robot is supported by its gyro and tilt sensors. It can move forwards and backwards and make left and right turns. It was the first of Taiwan Tech’s robots used to test their music reading software.

The vision system of the Taiwan Tech 2-wheeled Robot is a single LogiTech QuickCam Sphere webcam. It lacks the capability of auto-focus, so users must manually adjust the distance between the robot and the music notes it is reading. The camera gives it 98% character accuracy when it comes to note recognition. When not made to read notes, it can be used to sing, play drums, and draw simple portraits.
