Over the past decade, the internet has proliferated as a go to source of information and products. In 1997, Google established the world’s most popular search engine with an emphasis on ease-of-use and access to relevant information. In 1995, Amazon.com was founded with the vision that the public would embrace ecommerce, given the appropriate blend of convenience, selection, and low prices. Apple, on the brink of bankruptcy in the 1990s, established itself as a leader in technology by focusing on design and the user experience. These three firms now have combined annual revenue of over $125B and a tremendous impact on how we interact with technology. The goal of recool is to bring the innovation of these three firms to the architectural/engineering/construction (AEC) marketplace.. The AEC product market, unlike the consumer products market, suffers from a lack of transparency. While we see innovations in computers follow Moore’s Law, improvements in AEC products, services, and software have progressed much more slowly, a barrier to addressing energy efficiency and climate change.

WRL is honored to have been recognized in 2012 as a leader in sustainability by Architect Magazine. With recool, we’ll highlight our approach to design on projects in an open manner, revealing both our successes, as well as our challenges with application of different technologies. We hope we can be a driver of change to accelerate the adoption of high-performance design practices and meeting the goals of the AIA 2030 commitment and the Architecture 2030 challenge.
