Profile

Founded in 1890 with the help of a generous donation from oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago has grown into one of the preeminent research institutions in the U.S. All undergraduate students are required to complete the intensive core curriculum and can pursue any of the 99 majors and 54 minors. UChicago is dedicated to civic engagement through robust partnerships with Chicago’s communities, programs that strengthen local schools and urban research initiatives. Alumni include 80 Fulbright scholars and 11 Rhodes Scholars over the last decade; 89 Nobel Prize winners are affiliated with the school, including six current professors. Among the 400 diverse student organizations on and off campus are the humorous newspaper, Chicago Shady Dealer, and Eckhart Consulting, a pro bono consulting service. Notable alumni include Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, late astronomer Carl Sagan and the late writers Susan Sontag and Kurt Vonnegut.
