Profile

Located outside Philadelphia, PA, Haverford College is a private college founded by Welsh Quakers in 1833. Academics focus on the liberal arts — popular majors include biology, English and political science — and intimate class relationships: nearly 80% of classes have fewer than 20 students and over 60% of faculty members live on campus. With a 9:1 student-teacher ratio, students get individualized attention and many choose to conduct research with faculty. The college is rooted in Quaker traditions and has one of the oldest collections of Quaker history in the world. Instituted in 1897, the school’s honor code, written and governed by students, aims to foster trust by not having supervisors in dorms and allowing students to take tests without proctors and schedule their own final exams. Students at Haverford can also take courses at neighboring Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and the University of Pennsylvania. Over half of the student body study abroad in over 100 destinations. The Haverford Fords compete at the NCAA Division III level. The college’s Arboretum is the oldest planned college landscape in the country.
