Profile

Originally founded as a women’s college in 1926, today Sarah Lawrence College is a coeducational private liberal arts college located in Bronxville, NY. The school is known for its focus on student-faculty collaboration—90% of classes are small, round-table seminars, and all students have bi-weekly, individual conferences with their professors. While nearly 50 disciplines are offered, there are no majors at Sarah Lawrence. First-year students are assigned faculty advsiors, called “dons,” who work with students to develop their academic plans. Its campus, which is located just 30 minutes from Manhattan, boasts a number of arts and performing studios, state-of-the-art graphic computing equipment and a 60,000-square-foot visual arts center. These amenities are in addition to several unique student-life spaces, like the Black Squirrel student lounge and the Publication Space. More than 85% of students live on campus. Every academic year is bookended with Bacchanalia, an outdoor music festival hosted by the senior class. Sarah Lawrence’s Gryphons compete at the NCAA Division III level, and notable alumni include White House Chief of Staff and current mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel and director J.J. Abrams.
