Founded in 1871, Texas A&M University, College Station was Texas’s first public institution of higher learning and is the flagship university of the Texas A&M system. Texas A&M, one of the five largest universities in the nation, has a similarly expansive array of degree offerings; Texas A&M has 128 undergraduate degree programs. Its research expenditures total over $866 million, and undergraduates can get involved on-campus through programs like Research Scholars at Mays and the Melbern G. Glasscock Center for Humanities Research, or of-campus by working with the Council on Undergraduate Research. The Aggies compete in NCAA Division I in the Southeastern Conference, and their athletics are regarded as among the nation’s best, particularly football, track and field, and women’s basketball. Its baseball team finished the 2016 regular season as the nation’s top seed. Other distinguished activities includes the oldest campus Hillel organization in America and 59 Greek-letter organization, which engage 10% of the student body. The ASPIRE scholarship program pairs incoming freshmen with upperclassmen who have won the scholarship for mentorship.
