Profile

What began as a gift of an orphanage, 170 acres of farmland, a few barns and $6,000 in 1881, has transformed into the University of Connecticut. UConn is now a top public research university, and has more than 30,000 students. It offers 100 undergraduate majors in 14 schools and colleges. Students at UConn are rewarded for their innovation through programs such as the IDEA Grant, which awards up to $4,000 per student for creative or service endeavors. UConn is known for its dining services, which offers vegetarian, vegan, Kosher, Halal and gluten-free options, with local and seasonal food from the Spring Valley Student Farm. UConn has hundreds of clubs and activities on campus, including Dumbledore’s Army, Skydiving and Husky Xcursions. The UConn Huskies compete in NCAA Division I athletics, and in the 2003–2004 and 2013–2014 seasons, the men’s and women’s basketball teams won dual national championships.
