Profile

Established in 1856, St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY is named for the St. Lawrence River, which lies about 20 miles from campus and is the site of a school research facility. The university offers more than 36 majors and 38 minors, and students can also opt to design a “multi-field” interdisciplinary major and take classes at nearby Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam. The most popular majors are economics, psychology, biology, government and math. SLU offers 25 study abroad programs in 19 countries. Around 94% of freshmen receive grants from the school averaging $25,870. A highlight of the SLU educational offerings is the Adirondack Semester, during which students can learn as they rappel, climb, hike and explore the Adirondack region. Established in 1937, SLU’s Outing Club is one of the oldest and largest in the country. On “Peak Weekend” members of the Outing Club try to collectively climb all 46 Adirondack “High Peaks” on the same weekend at the same time. The St. Lawrence Saints compete in NCAA Division III athletics, except for hockey, which competes in NCAA Division I.
