Profile

Elon University, founded in 1889, is a private liberal arts institution located in Elon, NC. Offering over 60 majors and numerous interdisciplinary programs, Elon is one of only a handful of private universities in the country with accredited schools of business, communications, education, law and health sciences. The school’s name, which means “oak” in Hebrew, prompts one of Elon’s oldest traditions: incoming freshmen are given an acorn to symbolize their promise and potential; graduating seniors receive an oak sapling, signifying their growth and future success. Once a year the university hosts Elonthon, a 24-hour Dance Marathon that raises money to benefit the patients and families at Duke Children’s Hospital. Elon’s mascot is the Phoenix; the school has 17 men’s and women’s varsity sports competing in NCAA Division I athletics, in addition to its 18 intramural and 21 club sports.
