Profile

Louisiana State University is a large public research institution located in the state’s capital of Baton Rouge. The school offers more than 235 degree options across 15 schools, including the nationally recognized College of the Coast and Environment and School of Veterinary Medicine. Also, LSU is one of the only universities in the nation that offers Cajun French courses. Students are not required to live on campus, and are not guaranteed campus housing – however, the school does have 24 residence options. LSU’s aid program, “Pelican Promise,” guarantees financial assistance for students who live 150% or more below the poverty level. The two cannons that stand in front of the school’s Military Science/Aerospace Studies Building were fired in the Battle of Fort Sumter, the battle that started the Civil War in 1861. Students are involved in more than 350 student organizations, 40 Greek organizations, and 21 NCAA Division I teams. Prominent alumni include Shaquille O’Neal and James Carville.
