Founded in 1887, North Carolina State University, Raleigh is a public university in Raleigh. It is the largest university in the state with more than 300 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The most prominent majors are engineering, business and biological and biomedical Sciences. NC State’s research expenditures are nearly $325 million annually and the school runs two of the leading National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers. More than 12% of undergraduate students are members of the 51 fraternities and sororities that make up Greek life. Students can also easily get involved in the school community with over 600 student organizations. In 2004, NC State students started the Krispy Kreme Challenge, an annual charity event to benefit the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. Participants must run two-and a-half miles to the nearest Krispy Kreme doughnut shop, eat a dozen doughnuts each and run back within an hour. The NC State Wolfpack field 22 varsity teams that compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference.
