Profile

Established in 1844, Hillsdale College is a private liberal arts school located in rural Michigan. It is the first university in the nation to prohibit in its charter discrimination on the basis of race, sex or national origin. Hillsdale places an emphasis on self-governance, and incoming freshman are expected to sign an honor code that affirms their commitment to this principle. As part of the core curriculum, every student is required to take the same 15 classes across academic disciplines, including Great Books in the Western Tradition, The U.S. Constitution and the Physical Wellness Dynamics. Students also complete a liberal arts capstone course during their senior year. Since 1984, after a protest on affirmative action, Hillsdale declines all state and federal funding. Hillsdale competes at the NCAA Division II level.
