Profile

Founded in 1837 by abolitionists, Knox College in Galesburg, IL was one of the first colleges in the nation to admit students without regard to race or gender. It played an important role in history when it hosted one of the famous debates between Abraham Lincoln and Steven A. Douglas during the 1858 Senate race. Knox offers 38 majors and 49 minors and stresses experiential learning: 100% of students pursue immersive learning projects like internships, research and service programs. The school’s academic calendar is divided into three 10-week terms, with students taking three courses each term. A popular campus tradition is The Prairie Burn, when students gather to watch and participate in a necessary controlled burn of a school-owned field. Knox’s 18 varsity teams compete in the NCAA Division III and are called The Prairie Fire. Since 2006, 16 Knox students have won Fulbright scholarships.
